The First 3 Things to Do When Starting Flight Training

Get an Aviation Medical

In Canada, there are 2 main aviation medicals. One is a cat3 for a PPL and the other is a Cat 1 for  CPL. Go head and get your Cat1 medical right away even if you’re only doing a ppl to start. For most flight schools in Canada, it is mandatory to show proof of a cat 1 CPL medical before getting acceptance.

Complete an online ground school

Every flight school has their own ground school. Ground school is a classroom learning where you go over all the theory  of aviation such as how an airplane flies, understanding weather, learning the principles of navigation.
The downside to most ground schools is that it’s done in person. You have to show up at the airport 2x per week and listen to the instructor teach you the material. But, with the rise of online ground schools you can learn from the comfort of your own home. That’s exactly what I did. The big benefits to online learning is that you can be at home, save time, save transportation costs, and you can replay the lesson as many times as you need.
That’s why I have partnered with Level Flight to provide you with online learning at 10% off. This Private Pilot ground school course comes with unlimited practice exams. If you pass the practice exams you will get a recommendation letter, which you will need to take it to a testing centre, to then write the Transport Canada Private Pilot written exam. Get your radio licence

Before you press the transmit button to talk on the radio you need a licence. In aviation, thats called a Restricted Radio Operator Certificate. A fancy name to say you are capable of communicating on an aviation radio. Unlike other licences, where you have to renew it to stay valid. a RROC once passed it valid for a lifetime.
You also learn the meaning between important phrases such as PANPAN and MAYDAY. You learn that swearing on the radio is forbidden. They could smack you with a $5k fine or imprison you for 1 year if you violate the rules. I have attached a link to the study for the Radio Licence test.
