Northern lights over the Prairies. Taken by my colleague. The Suns solar wind interacts with the Earths magnetic field and usually deflects 98% of it back into space. Since the magnetic fields are weaker at the poles a small amount of solar wind passes through the atmosphere. The gas molecules in the atmosphere get excited and produce a spectacular greenish yellow glow.
