Charter Flying in Northern Ontario

My name is Scott Babb and I am currently working in Northwestern Ontario as a pilot/“rampy”.

What made you want to become a Pilot?

I found the aviation industry through a family connection as my father was a pilot.

Growing up immersed in the industry and seeing what the lifestyle of an airline pilot entailed. I decided to do an introductory flight for my 12th birthday.

I was hooked.

How did you start out in aviation?

  • I graduated with an Advanced Diploma in Aviation from Algonquin College in April of 2020.

  • I’m currently working at my first job in the industry at a 702/703 charter operation.

  • I fly as a co-pilot on the PA-31 350 Navajo as well as a Cessna 182 RG.

  • I also work as a ramp attendant, which mainly consists of receiving freight and loading airplanes.

What are some of the challenges you faced while staring out?

  • Some of the challenges that I faced starting off in the industry include adapting from the slower pace of a flight school to the fast paced environment that is a commercial operation.
  • Another eye opening experience was just how quickly I needed to learn a new aircraft and everything that encompasses that.
  • Whether it was learning the company standard operation procedures, which was a completely foreign thing to me, to all the required emergencies for the Navajo, as well as developing the hands and feet to fly a more complex aircraft that I was accustomed to.

Any advise you'd like to give new pilots?

If I could offer any tips to someone who is just about to finish flight school or someone who is a recent graduate it would be to just say YES.

What I mean by that is that you should take every opportunity to meet people and network as you never know where you initial break, or your next break into the industry may come from.
